How to check Google rankings and use the results to improve your SEO
By Free SEO Apps · Updated 18 September 2026 · 6 minute read
A Google ranking is useful when it helps you decide what to do next. Which page appears for your target keyword? Which competitors sit above it? Does Google return service pages, product listings or detailed guides? This free Google SERP checker helps you investigate those questions before you change your website.
Use the form above for a snapshot of up to 50 Google organic positions. Then work through this guide to interpret the results, compare the pages competing for the same search and choose a practical next step.
What is a Google SERP checker?
SERP stands for search engine results page. A SERP checker retrieves search results for a keyword and a defined search location, making it easier to find a domain and inspect competing pages.
This tool focuses on organic website results. It checks your domain across the returned pages and shows the matching ranking page alongside competing results. It is not a Google Maps rank tracker, an advertising report or a complete reproduction of every feature on a Google results page.
How to check your Google ranking
- Enter your website. Use your domain, such as example.com.au. The checker looks for matching pages on that domain.
- Choose one search phrase. Start with a service, product or question that matters to your business. Be specific: “emergency plumber gold coast” gives you a different comparison from “plumbing”.
- Select an Australian location. Choose a suburb or city from the suggestions, or leave the field blank for Australia-wide results.
- Run the check. Your results open on a separate page with the ranking information and returned organic listings.
- Note the collection time. Matching searches reuse data collected within the last 24 hours, so repeating a check immediately may show the same snapshot.
The current checker uses desktop results in English and searches up to 50 organic positions. Keep the keyword and location consistent when comparing checks.
How to interpret your SERP results
A ranking is a snapshot
Your reported position belongs to the query, location and collection time shown. Treat it as a baseline for that search, rather than a promise that every customer will see an identical result.
Check which page is ranking
A domain match alone does not tell you whether the best page is appearing. If your homepage ranks for a specialist service, inspect whether you have a useful dedicated service page and whether your navigation and internal links make it easy to find.
“Not found” has a specific meaning
If your domain is not found, it was absent from the returned organic results within the checked top 50. That does not establish that your website is missing from Google's index. Check the domain spelling and search phrase, then use Google Search Console to investigate indexing if needed. A failed lookup is also different from a successful search with no matching domain.
Use Search Console for the wider picture
A single SERP check complements longer-term performance data. Google Search Console reports clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position over a selected period. Its average position is not the same measurement as one keyword snapshot. View: Google Search Console performance guide.
Turn competitor research into an SEO action plan
Open a few relevant results above your website and compare them with your ranking page. Look for differences you can explain and address, rather than copying competitors or assuming one feature caused their position.
- Search intent: are the results mostly buying pages, local services, comparisons or tutorials? Consider whether your page answers the same kind of need.
- Useful coverage: note practical questions competitors answer that your page leaves unresolved, such as service scope, process or product suitability.
- Clear page titles and headings: make it easy to understand what your page offers. Use the target phrase naturally where it describes the content.
- Evidence and clarity: add relevant examples, original photos or accurate details that help visitors evaluate your offer.
- Internal navigation: link to the page from related content with descriptive wording so visitors can reach it.
For example, a local service page might explain the service but omit the areas covered and how to request help. Improving those details gives you a specific change to evaluate. Adding words solely to make the page longer gives you much less direction.
Record the original ranking, the collection date and the changes you make. Recheck after fresh data is available and review trends alongside enquiries or sales. A ranking change alone does not prove that one edit caused it.

For a business serving a particular area, use the location selector to make the check relevant to that market. You could compare the same keyword in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, keeping each result labelled with its own location.
Do not combine checks from different locations into a single before-and-after comparison. Also keep organic website rankings separate from Google Maps visibility: this form checks organic results, so a strong or weak result here does not establish your Maps position.
Free Google SERP checker FAQs
Is the SERP checker free?
Yes. You can run a check without signing up. Usage limits apply to keep the tool available, and matching searches share a 24-hour cache.
Can I check another country or mobile rankings?
This form currently supports Australian locations and English desktop results. It does not offer a country or device switch.
Does every check fetch new results?
No. A matching search can reuse a snapshot less than 24 hours old. Check the collection timestamp on the results page before treating a repeat search as a new measurement.
Does this check AI Overview citations?
No. Use the separate Google AI Overview Checker to investigate whether a domain is cited in an available overview for a search.

Running a check measures visibility; it does not change your website or guarantee better rankings. Use what you learn to prioritise useful content and website improvements.
